At Filao Adventures, we believe travel should leave a positive mark. We partner with
eco-certified lodges, support local Maasai communities, and contribute to Kenya's wildlife conservation efforts
on every journey we craft.
Lake Kivu is famous for its stunning scenery, with green hills, islands, and beaches that make it a popular destination for swimming, kayaking, boat tours, and relaxation.
It is also scientifically unique because enormous amounts of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide are trapped in its deep waters. Rwanda safely extracts some of this methane to generate electricity, but scientists closely monitor the lake because a rare natural event called a limnic eruption—where dissolved gases suddenly escape—could pose a serious hazard, although such an event is considered unlikely in the near term.
